Grammar steps to improve your English skills. A. Step 1: Parts of Speech Parts of speech are the basic categories of words in a language, based on their grammatical function and meaning. The main parts of speech are: 1. Nouns (N):  Words that refer to people, places, things, and ideas. * Examples: dog, city, happiness 2.
